Highland Lakes closures - Updated

Share

Effective at 8:30 p.m. on June 6th LCRA will close Lake Travis to recreational boating until further notice. LCRA is taking this action due to the increasing danger submerged objects pose to recreational boaters and the detrimental impact of boat wakes to property.

"Floodgate operations are underway at Buchanan, Wirtz, Starcke, Mansfield and Tom Miller dams along the Highland Lakes. Water also is flowing over the designated spillway at Inks Dam, which has no floodgates. LCRA has also closed Inks Lake and lakes Marble Falls and LBJ to recreational boating. For more information, visit LCRA's Flood Operations Report. For more on LCRA's swift water and debris advisories, visit the Water Recreation and Safety page. Follow LCRA on Facebook and Twitter for updates."

Questions have been raised online about why Buchanan is being emptied when Travis is full. It appears that LCRA maintains "buffer" space in Buchanan in case the heavy rains continue.

UPDATE "LCRA will reopen lakes Travis, Marble Falls, Inks and LBJ to recreational boating at noon on Friday, June 10. Flows throughout the Highland Lakes remain strong, and anyone boating or swimming should use caution and be on the lookout for debris and submerged objects. Flood management operations continue at all dams on the Highland Lakes. Water continues to flow over the spillway at Inks Dam, which has no floodgates. For more information, visit LCRA's Flood Operations Report. Bacteria levels in the lakes are higher than normal after recent flooding rains. LCRA's water recreation and safety page has more information on safety on the lakes. "
