City Council showdown - Updated

At a Special Meeting on Saturday evening (the 28th) major changes to the Council's make up took place. A recent gathering storm between the incoming Mayor Kara King and acting Mayor and long serving council member Bill Goodwin finally blew up.

Having finally found a remote meeting system that all parties could live with, the following major events took place:

1. Public comments online were almost exclusively supportive of Goodwin, who had been Mayor since Monty Parker resigned suddenly and moved out of the area in December.

2. E-mails were produced which showed Goodwin breaching normal practice and making specific demands of City staff: "I would like all members of staff that have business on the agenda to be in physical attendance, and urge you to tell them that I expect that of them,". It also showed an e-mail response from Council member John Cobb - "If any one of you feel scared of repercussions, please know that I will go to the floor fighting for anyone who does the right thing, and I believe the rest of the council thinks the same way." Council member Willott made appeals for calm and for better use of communication channels. Goodwin and Cobb apologised to each other.

3. John Cobb made three motions - to remove Godwin from his spot on the WTCPUA as City rep, his membership of the City's Economic development Board and finally as Mayor. The first two motions failed with Cobb and Clark voting for and Goodwin, Willott and King voting against. On the motion on Mayor, Goodwin was not allowed to vote as the motions all concerned him. The vote was then 2-2 and failed.

4. After the Mayoral position vote failed, Cobb resigned as Council member. Goodwin resigned as Mayor and Kara King was elected unanimously as Mayor - in advance of her actual date of appointment - after an uncontested vote - in May. Goodwin's positions on the WTCPUA and EDB remain unchanged.

5. When asked if he was surprised by the way King voted, Cobb answered "Very".

On March 30th Goodwin quit from both the WTCPUA and the EDB seats - citing loss of faith.
