No gunman found at LT schools
LTISD issued the following report after the incident on Friday during which a gunman was reported in a local school bathroom. Rumors spread that shots had been fired and that the incident was staged to rattle the Football squad prior to the State semi finals.
"At the end of the day, we are pleased to report that our students' safety was never comprised as a result of today's incident at Lake Travis Middle and Lake Travis High schools.
At approximately 10:15 a.m., a custodian at LTMS walked into a boys restroom near the front office and claimed to have seen a man dressed in a black jacket holding a handgun. The custodian then notified district officials. The District employs two, full-time Travis County Sheriff's Office School Resource Officers (SRO) who responded immediately. Local law enforcement officials including the City of Bee Cave and City of Lakeway police departments were notified and quickly arrived at the scene as well. LTMS implemented standard protocol lockdown procedures, and because of their proximity, LTHS, the District Administration Building, and the Maintenance Department Building did so as well. At no time was any other District campus impacted. Under lockdown procedures, individuals-including parents-are not allowed to enter or leave the school or district facility.
For the next several hours, law enforcement officials performed comprehensive sweeps and searches of both LTMS and LTHS. During this time, students were in their classrooms under adult supervision. It is our understanding that students may have communicated inaccurate information to parents about the event via their mobile phones. Claims that gunshots had been fired were absolutely false and unfounded. In accordance with crisis response procedures, law enforcement agencies dispatched several ambulances to the scene. Services were provided for students with special health needs. However, as previously reported, no injuries were reported during the response.
Please know that during the incident, District officials made every attempt possible to keep parents informed of all developments. As you may already know, the District incorporates several channels for disseminating real-time, immediate information to parents including the District and school websites, QuickNews email blasts (Constant Contact), Facebook and Twitter.
While this incident remains under investigation, it provides District, campus and law enforcement officials the opportunity to review crisis response and management procedures. We thank our first responders-the Travis County Sheriff's Office and the City of Bee Cave and City of Lakeway police departments-for their immediate and expert handling of the incident. Finally, we thank our parents for their patience during this incident, and ultimately, for supporting us in our efforts to keep student safety our utmost priority."
