A 26 year old worker at the Summit Lakeway elderly care facility has been arrested this week on suspicion of abuse of one of its residents.

Following examination of evidence obtained from a video camera concealed by the victim's daughter it appears the worker pinched and slapped the non cummincative and seriously disabled victim several times, despite her attempts to defend herself. Cornelius Dwayne Neal has been charged with two felonies.

  • Lori Wakefield  - This breaks my heart
Oh, this breaks my heart. I do not know the victim or family, but I feel so sad that this has happened. I sincerely hope that everyone is ok and that the Summit handles the situation appropriately. My son and I have volunteered at the Summit a few times and I would have never suspected something like this could happen. My thoughts and best wishes go out to the victim and family for swift justice, peace and a sense of safey and security.
  • Concerned Citizen  - Former Patient @ Summit @ Lakeway
I was not surprised at this type of treatment from the Summit @ Lakeway. I was a patient there for seven days, 24/7 at the end of May, 2012. I saw so many things which were wrong, not good for patient's health and not good for my health, safety, welfare while I was there. I was there for therapy on my knee from a complete knee replacement. I was the only patient around me who was mobile and knew what was going on. Some of the other patients could not hear/see/talk and/or walk, so I wanted to help them/speak out for them.

A few of the incidents which happened to me, was not having/finding anyone on night nurse duties when I needed to get up/down for the restroom, no drinking water furnished to patient's rooms during the day, my main meds were w/held from me for over 3 1/2 hours (BP, heart, etc) one day and then the same eve, my much needed pain pills were not given to me for over 4 hours, due to the Med nurse disappearing from the 'floor/bldg' for hours and hours. When I told His charge nurse many times, she said He was the only one who had keys to the med cart She did not seem concerned. I had an oxygen tube on from the hospital to be worn @ the Summit @ Lakeway, due to a slight lung congestion. I removed my oxygen tube due to no help geting in/out of bed to/from restroom at night. Three days went by before my Dr. visited & noticed I was not even using/wearing my oxygen tube! The Summit @ Lakeway emplyees never questioned where/what about my oxygen/tubes. Patient rooms abandoned for hours on end, my food trays not brought twice in one day, my DIL had to empty my trash, hunt linens, towels, etc. for 4 days and do my 'house cleaning' in my room until she finally insisted on 'housecleaning' clean my room and on and on and on.

I told each employee I found, I told the head/charge nurses, just anyone I could find. I finally checked out after a week, which I much needed another full week of knee therapy, but I was too afraid of my health/safety/ welfare from my own experience of what I saw, heard, etc. I felt sorry for the patients.

I wrote the Director of the facility when I arrived home of the poor conditions, or lack thereof, and He assured me the Summit @ Lakeway was a fine award winning facility.

I am glad someone did something to bring out what I thought was happening and am glad other people now know also.
