Austin Energy rate increase stirs dual controversies
This week saw major criticism of a proposed rate increase by Austin Energy - which supplies many areas in Bee Cave and Lakeway with power - on two fronts.
The increase - the first in 17 years - includes the change of their "base fee" from $6 to $22 per month - which is being assailed by many groups as a disproportionately unfair charge on the less-well-off.
In addition all increases are being hailed as unfair on customers outside the City when the rate increase is designed to pay for improvements solely in Austin and for parks, roads and police that they employ solely "down town".
