Free Wine Tasting at Spicewood Vineyards
A few weeks ago I fancied a drive in my new car - so we headed West on spec to visit Spicewood Vineyards. Did I tell you they're in Spicewood? A great idea - as it turned out.
About 20 miles down 71 and an interesting drive into almost nowhere (I don't know anywhere else I've ever driven where we crossed so many cattle grids) and you arrive at an oasis in the Hill Country. Two new buildings, water features, two covered patios with lots of tables and chairs, giant Oak trees ("raining" acorns on the tin roof!) - the works.

Two new buildings nestled behind the vines and a bunch of great people. First we met Georgia from Australia (I'm a Brit so we bonded instantly), then the owner Ron Yates and finally Annie Berg - another fellow Brit who is just a dynamo of an events manager for the venue.
For the next three hours (two and half longer than we'd planned) we sat,we chatted, we met lots of other visitors (including three great couples from Colorado in their 32 Ford based Hot Rods). Oh, and we drank some wine.
Did I tell you about the wine? Right now much of their production is from grapes imported (many from Washington State) as their own vines continue to mature. The prices are very reasonable and include Chardonnay, Shiraz, Zinfandel and some great blends. Ron told me about his plans and some fascinating varietals coming down the pike next year and later - some I even got to taste. Wow!
Since then we've been back to a theater production in their events center (what a place for weddings etc!) and plan a Sunday afternoon picnic on the patio (wine we'll buy at the Vineyard) with some friends soon.
Highly recommended.
We've even done a special deal with them so you can try seven wines at no charge. Bet you'll buy some. Tell 'em we sent you!
